John L. Gross, 85, postmaster and businessman in Lastrup for 45 years, died Friday at 11:30 a.m. in St. Gabriel's Hospital where he had been admitted on Monday. He had been in ill health for the past eight years. A Solemn Requiem High Mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church in Lastrup Rev. Arthur Hoppe officiating with Rev. Benedict Virnig and Rev. Bernard Kahlhamer assisting. Pallbearers were Alfred Gross, Darrell Nystrom, Alex Gross Jr., James Gross, Vernon Gross and Glen Eisel. All business places in Lastrup were closed during the funeral.
He was born in Granite Township Sept. 6, 1877, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Math Gross. He married Gertrude Kubitschek November 1904, in Pierz. They lived in Pierz until 1918 and then moved to Lastrup. He held the job as postmaster in Lastrup for 40 years. He was in the hardware buusiness and also in partnership with his brother Peter in the grocery business until his retirement a few years ago.
He is survived by his widow and nine children: Frank, John and Gertrude, Lastrup; Alex, International Falls; Herman, Reinhard and Henry, St. Cloud; Mathew, Fergus Falls; Mrs. Frances Dupont, Portland, Ore. One son and a daughter preceded him in death. Three brothers, Peter and Steve, Lastrup and Matt, Fon du Lac, Wis., also survive. There are 15 grandchildren.
