James and his brother John were the sons of John Currran (born in County Cavan, Ireland) and Mary Ann (Anderson) Curran-McCauley from Kings (Offaly) County, Ireland. John was the son of James Curran and Rose (Prior) Curran . Mary Ann's parents were Roger Anderson and Catherine (Dunn) Anderson.

James Curran married Florence (Bowes) Curran in Philadelphia where they raised five children (and had two infant deaths as well). The family lived almost their entire lives in Philadelphia.
