Powhattan Bee (Powhattan, Kansas) Fri 3 Sep 1915. p1
"J.H. Barnett was born at Crown Point, Essex county, New York March 6, 1825 and died Wednesday, August 25, 1915 being 90 years, 6 months of age. He married Martha Jane Sherman and to this union were born five [six listed, 9 actual] boys and one girl: J.D. of Emporia; O.W. of St. Louis; O.G. of Oneida; C.G. of Powhattan; A.H. of Powhattan; Geo. of Eldorado and Mrs. Mattie Killoren of Powhattan. There have been born twenty-one grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Barnett left New York state and went to Illinois, and from there the family moved to Kansas. Mr. Barnett was always a kind husband and father."
[Note: the birth year on the stone is 1827, while the obituary says 1825. Also J.H. and Mattie had 9 sons and 2 daughters. Two sons and one daughter died in infancy. Another son, Charles preceded his father in death.]
----------------------
Jedadiah (or Jedediah) and Martha Jane Sherman were married March 7, 1854 in Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois. They were both born in New York in neighboring communities, but it is not known if they knew each other before they came to Illinois. All but one of their children were born in Illinois.
I have come to have some reservations about the links to J.H. Barnett's parents. Several dates do not line up. I am not sure which of J.H.'s birthdates is correct. Despite the name of his inferred father, he could have been named after an uncle just as well. Any new information is welcome.
