Allen Ray Bares served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives and the Louisiana state Senate. He was elected President of the Louisiana State Senate in 1988, a position he held for many years. Senator Bares was passionately Pro-Life, introducing legislation to ban most abortions in Louisiana. He was a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was active in educational reform, serving as National Vice-President of the Education Commission of the States. He co-authored the Workman's Compensation Reform Act. He was active in several organizations concerned with preserving the French Language in Louisiana.
