Wallace "Wally" Carpenter, 82, Shelbyville, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at W.S. Major Hospital in Shelbyville.

Born March 5, 1917, in Rush County, he was the son of Frank and Ethel (Patterson) Carpenter. he married Mary Barlow Dec. 23, 1939, and she died Aug. 21, 1958. He married Ernestine Deutscher July 30, 1959, and she survives.

He owned and operated Carpenter's 66 Service Station for 26 years in St. Paul, retiring in 1979.

He had lived in Shelbyville for the past three years. He was a member of the St. Paul Christian Church, the Waldron Masonic Lodge No. 217, where he was a 50-year member, and the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis.

Survivors besides his wife include one daughter, Jo (mrs. Al) Disbro of Winona Lake; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Louise McColley of Shelbyville, Lavinna Bayless of London, Ind., and Frankeline Webster of Manilla; two brothers, Frank Carpenter of Rushville and William Carpenter of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Fred; one brother, John; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Glenn E. George Funeral Home in St. Paul, the Rev. L.J. Poe officiating.

Burial is in Paul Hill Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
