Emil Lowenburg was born Emil Konrad Andersson Lövenberg in Vidbo Parish, the son of Samuel Andersson (1840-?) and Anna Brita Hjärpe (1839-?).

In about 1901, Emil married Anna Elizabeth Stålberg (1869-1918) in Söderhamn Parish. With Anna, Emil had five known children between 1902 and 1911: Enar, Erik, Evar, Esther, and Margaret. Following the birth of their third child, and between the 11 May and the 25 May 1906, Emil, Anna, and their children, including Anna's son Per Vilhelm (later Wilhelm Wellin), immigrated to the United States, by way of Canada aboard the SS Lake Erie. Soon after their arrival, they made their way to Portland, Oregon, where Emil's sister-in-law and her husband had already immigrated.

While living in Sweden, Emil worked as a general laborer nad farm laborer. In Portland, he was employed as a milwright for a Lumber Mill. Emil died in Portland in 1930, about twelve years after his wife, who died in 1918.
