Wilhelm Wellin was born Per Vilhelm Ture Stålberg in Göteborg, Sweden the son of Anna Elizabeth Stålberg (1869-1918) and Per Anders Welin (1861-1922). Anna and Per never married, and much of Wilhelm's childhood was spent living with his aunt Emma in Söderhamn, Gävleborg, Sweden. In about 1901, Wilhelm's mother married Emil Conrad Löwenborg (1875-1930), after which Wilhelm was raised by Emil and subsequently became the older brother of five siblings: Enar, Erik, Evar, Esther, and Margaret. On the 11 May 1906, Wilhelm, along with his parents and siblings, left Sweden for America. By 1910, they were all living in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, where Wilhelm's step-father was a millwright.

On the 2 December 1914, Wilhelm married Lois Beatrice Agee (1897-1983), the daughter of Otto W. Agee (1868-1904) and Tirzah Olive Stephens (1873-1967), in Vancouver, Clark Co., Washington. Wilhelm and Lois had three children between 1916 and 1922: Alice Lucretia Wellin (1916-1985), William Casper Wellin (1918-1990), and Calvin Coolidge Wellin (1922-2010). Until his retirement in 1960 Wilhelm spent most of his working life being employed as a mill worker. He passed away at 82 years old in Portland; and was buried in Skyline Memorial Gardens. His wife, Lois, followed him in death six years later.
