James (Jimmie, on his birth records) Loftin was born to Cornelius and Nancy Burris (Burse in the Family Bible) Loftin, January 22, 1899 in Uniontown, Oklahoma also known as Indian Territory.

According to Ghost Towns of America, Uniontown is a ghost community in Tulsa County, Oklahoma. The area has been in decline since the late sixties. In 1977 the old general store was still open. The old school, 3 old churches and a few homes remain. The city of Tulsa has built over much of Uniontown. Some of the old houses in the area of 61st and Mingo were moved for the construction of Hillcrest Hospital.

James Loftin and Dottie Bell Blair were married January 23, 1921. To this union 14 children were born; 9 Daughters are Lenora Matthews, Nellie Robbs Thames, Zelta Lozano, Priscilla Halsted, Janice Campbell, Lylian Wright, Sharon Sanders, Donnie Sullins and Mary Gerg. 5 sons are Carl, Herbert, Clyde, LaDon and Jerry Loftin. He was preceeded in death by his parents and one son, LaDon.

James Loftin was of the Missionary Baptist faith, a 32nd degree Mason, a farmer, vocal and music teacher. During his career, he held many singing schools, getting paid in chickens, eggs and canned foods. He had opportunities to teach music at Arkansas Tech University and set music to lyrics for the Stamps Baxter Quartet and others.
