Obituary:

Terrible Accident:

A very distressing accident, resulting in the death of one man and the narrow escape of another, occurred last Tuesday morning, on the farm of Mr. John Wood three miles north-west of this city. The particulars are about as follows: Mr. Wood employed a man named Benjamin Hess to assist him in digging a well, and the work has been going on steadily for several weeks, a depth of near forty feet having been reached. Hess on Monday evening made a blast and suspended work, and Tuesday morning went down in the well to clear it out, when he was almost immediately overpowered by carbonic acid gas, and started up a ladder which was in the wall, but only succeeded in getting up about ten feet when he became unconscious and fell back. Mr. Wood, who was at the mouth of the well, called one or two of the other men who were near by, tied a rope around his body, and went down to see what was the matter. He had hardly reached the bottom of the well, when he called out to the men above to drawn up, which was immediately done and not a moment too soon, as on reaching the top he was perfectly helpless. A firemen was then let down in the well and one of the men went down and brought up the body of Hess, to late, as upon examination life appeared to be extinct.

He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss. Mr. Wood, we are informed, has entirely recovered.
