Jacob Hess and twin brother Jeremiah Hess were the second and third sons and 6th and 7th children (of 15) of parents Abraham Hess (1762-1821) and his wife Elizabeth "Ann" (Fisher) Hess (1769-1834).

Jacob was particularly close to his twin brother Jeremiah Hess. Jacob named his second son after Jeremiah. His first son Daniel was named after his father-in-law Daniel Daniels (1763-1849). Jacob and his brother Jeremiah Hess married two sisters, both daughters of Daniel Daniels.

Jacob married Mary Daniels (1795-1882) with whom he had 9 children. The marriage lasted 62 years until Jacob's death.

1. Eldest son Daniel Hess (1814-1840) was named after his maternal grandfather Revolutionary War Veteran Daniel Daniels (1762-1849). Young Daniel moved west with his double first cousin David Hess (son of Uncle Jeremiah Hess and Catherine Daniels). Daniel died out in Blackford County, Indiana at the early age of 26. He did marry and left behind one son.
2. Jeremiah Hess (1817-1876) was named after his paternal uncle Jeremiah Hess (1793-1876) who was his father's twin brother. He married Delilah Smith (1824-1899) in 1843 with whom he had 8 children. His FAG ID#76850215.
3. Catherine (Hess) Mellott (1818-1894). Catherine was named after her maternal aunt
Catherine (Daniels) Hess (1798-1840), her mother's favorite sister. Catherine married
Nathaniel Mellott with whom she had 4 children. After being widowed she married James Mullen, with whom she had another son, and lived in Allentown, PA. FAG ID#96293082.
4. Rebecca (Hess) Hockensmith (1821-1865) was named after her maternal aunt Rebecca (Daniels) Wink (1805-1874) who married but remained childless. Rebecca married Jacob Hockensmith (1814-1861), in 1838, with whom she had 8 children. Her FAG ID#140828012.
5. Benjamin Hess (1823-1868) named after his maternal uncle Benjamin Daniels (1793-1852). Benjamin married Mary Ellen Garland (1818-1915) with whom he had 8 children. Benjamin and family removed to the state of Missouri. He was tragically killed in a mechanical accident in which he was drowned in a well. FAG ID#140828012.
6. Sarah (Hess) Hess (1827-1868). Sarah became the first wife of Adam Hess (1821-1900) with whom she had 1 daughter. Sarah died in childbirth with her second child. Husband Adam Hess married (2nd) Dorothy (Hess) Hess (1834-1912) who was Sarah's double first cousin, the daughter of Jeremiah Hess and Catherine Daniels. Sarah's FAG ID# 29965224.
7. Mary Ann (Hess) Dishong (b. 1829) became the wife of Civil War Veteran Paul W. Dishong (1828-1902) FAG ID#53815057. This marriage produced 6 children. Mary Ann's burial place is currently unknown. Husband Paul is buried in West Virginia.
8. Nelson Hess (1832-1895) married Lydia Sipes (1834-1911) with whom he had 2 daughters. His FAG ID#58745301.
9. George Hess (1836-1901) married Elizabeth Sipes (1839-1930) sister of the wife of his brother Nelson. This marriage produced 2 children. His FAG ID#18264092.
