Lewis James Munn was the youngest son of John William Munn Sr. and his third wife, Phebe (Phoebe) Homan. He married Emma (Amalia) Rochholz 14 September 1882 at Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois. They had two children: Emma Blanche and Oliver Dunster.

Lewis was cheated of a college education because his mother was too pained at the idea of his leaving home, so he became a farmer. After his marriage to Emma, they moved to Muscatine, where he became a superintendant of something at the Quaker Oats mill. From there they moved to Rock Island, Illinois, and eventually went to live with their daughter Blanche in Evanston, Illinois.

Lewis was a member of the Odd Fellows. He was a Mason, belonging to the Blue Lodge and Knights Templar. And in his later years he was a deacon in the Baptist church.
