Samuel Munn was born March 11, 1843, the son of John William Munn Sr. and Sophia Pearson, John's 2nd wife. He served in the Civil War with the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Following his discharge, he married Mary Elizabeth Finefield. Together they farmed in Cedar County, Iowa. They were the parents of five children:

Fred Samuel (1869)
Herbert "Bertie" (1871)
Rena (1874)
Mackie (1878)
