William Carroll was the son of John Porch/Poarch and his first unknown wife. The family called him Dove. He married Lucinda Carolyn Massey.
He enlisted to fight in the Mexican War as a twelve month volunteer in the infantry and was attached to the First Regiment commanded by Captain Harris Maulden. The company left Lewisburg, Tennessee on May 21, 1846. He fought under Gen Zachary Taylor in Monterey, Vera Crus, and Jalapa Mexico where he was ordered to Vera Cruz to board ship to New Orleans,Louisiana where he was mustered out and paid off May 1847.
