Wayne was a son of Noah "Lee" & Annie "Blanche" Lewis Abernathy of Lincoln Co., NC. He was married to Edith Violet Mitchem. They were the parents of two children: Gary Wayne Abernathy b. 12/19/1946 (m. Catherine Willis) and Frances Dian Abernathy b. 11/11/1947 (m. Dale Felmet). Wayne served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during WW II.
