James was the son of Hershel Wellington Edwards & Eva Leonard. He was in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict and was killed in a US Army transport aircraft accident at the Ardmore Airport in Carter Co., Oklahoma. The Lockeed L-188 aircraft was stopping in Ardmore for fuel when it made a missed approach and while circling for a second attempt at landing, it crashed into a hill, killing 83 of the 98 occupants.
