Two persons drowned in four feet of water in the Grasse River two miles south of Madrid, near Bucks Bridge, Sunday shortly after 6 p.m. Dead are Mrs. Clours (Winnie) Hill, 39, 9 Church Street, Canton, and Rollie Smith, 39, North Russell.

According to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, Mr. and Mrs. Hill and Mr. and Mrs, Smith were fishing in a small boat. One of the four reportedly hooked onto a large fish. In an attempt to land the fish, The boat was overturned, throwing all four into the water. Mrs. Smith managed to hold on to the boat's rope.

Mr. Smith, who was reported to he a good swimmer, was attempting to save Mrs. Hill, who was reported to be scared of the water. Mr. Hill made his way to shore and went a farmhouse about a quarter of a mile away to seek help.

The boat capsized shortly after 6, help didn't arrive until about 7 p.m. or shortly afterward because of the lapse in time in getting to a telephone. When the Madrid Rescue Squad arrived at the scene, Mrs. Smith was still hanging onto the boat.

Mr. Smith's body was found in four feet of water shortly after 8. Death was attributed to drowning.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Mann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jack M. Wells will officiate. Burial will be in North Russell Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Hoadley Smith; his father, Fay Smith of Hermon; two brothers. Horace of North Burton, N. J. and Kenneth of Fine; one sister, Mrs. Harvey (Noreen) Hickok of Russell and nieces and nephews.

He was born in Russell, Dec. 27, 1925. a son of Fay Smith and the late Nettie Reed Smith.

He spent his early life in Russell; attended Russell grade school and was graduated from Knox Memorial High School. He was also graduated from Canton ATC where he majored in electrical technology. On Jan. 23, 1960 he married Lucille Hoadley in a ceremony performed in the Presbyterian Church of Canton. The Rev. Jack M. Wells, pastor, officiated.

Mr. Smith had been employed as an electrician in the Knox Memorial School.

He was a member of the Russell Lodge No. 565 F & AM. The lodge will meet at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 8:30 to give the Masonic
