Piano Magnate. Born in Mason Village, New Hampshire, April 5, 1798, he was a cabinet-maker when he formed a partnership with James Stewart and started making pianos in 1823. After the Stewart & Chickering Company dissolved in 1830, he started doing business as Chickering & Company and built a new five story factory in Boston. Chickering is credited with pioneering the first pronounced curved hammer strike lines in squares which permitted larger hammers. He also patented single piece iron frames combined with wrest plank bridges and damper guides in square pianos, and with massive wrest plank terminations in grand pianos. At the time of his death, his company had built over 12,000 pianos and was producing about 1,500 a year worth $200,000.
