George was born to Jonas Chickering and Elizabeth Harraden. He was the third of four children and the youngest son. The Chickering sons worked as pianomakers, and became partners in the company in 1853 forming Chickering and Sons.

On Oct. 23, 1856, George married Eliza Wild in Boston. Eliza was the daughter of Daniel Wild of Boston. Eliza and George had one child together, Anna Eliza Chickering, in 1859. Anna was later to marry artist Julius C. Rolshoven.

Sadly Eliza died young at the age of 22, soon after the birth of her only child, passing away on Mar. 8, 1860.

George married again on Jan. 24, 1866 to Mary Clark Nichols, in Boston. Mary was the daughter of prominent William F. Nichols and Mary Clark of Boston. Mary and George had one child together, Mary Chickering. Mary was first married to Capt. John Fitz Herbert Vernon Ruxton of Ireland who died soon after at the age of 28, in a riding accident. Mary married again to George Livingston Nichols, a New York lawyer.

George Chickering was the last of of the brothers to pass on. He died at the age of 69 at his Brush Hill country home in Milton (Readville), Massachusetts, in 1899.
