Moses was the son of Edmond Harrison Branscum and Nancy Bumgarner Cristle. On 9 August 1856 in what is now Stone County, Arkansas, Moses married Anna "Annie" Passmore. They had the following children: William, James Ed, Andrew, Samuel, John, Levi, Malinda, Calvin, Elizabeth, Pollie, and Thomas. During the Civil War, Moses served as a second lieutenant in Co. K of the 16th Arkansas Infantry. Moses was said to have had a family of mean boys. The boys often fought among themselves and their father would say, "Let 'em fight. There's more calico and dishes in the store in town." Moses is buried in the Branscumb Cemetery, aka Culp Cemetery, near Calico Rock, but still in Stone County.
