William Lorenza Witwer had a natural ability in mechanics and was self-taught as a carpenter and millwright. Although untrained in the use of blueprints, he went to St. Louis, Missouri, and helped lay out the Textile Building, Manufacturers' Building and the City of Egypt for the World's Fair. He returned to Canton, Ohio, and maintained a contracting business until his death from cancer.
