Laura was the tenth of twelve children born to Matthias and Elizabeth Lovina (Lyerly) Moose. She married Doctor William 'Dock" Hatley in 1873 and they had ten children: Evie J., Daniel Washington, Alice Jane, Rosa A., Mamie A., Andrew, Effie Brown, Martin Luther, James Hoyle and Louie.
