Vaun R. Cole, Jr., 83 of Lebanon, died at his home on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 surrounded by his family.
Vaun was born in Sanford on November 9, 1922 to Vaun and Susie Mace Cole, Sr. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1939. He joined the Army Air Force right out of high school and proudly served his country in World War II.
After completing his term in the military, Vaun began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier in Lebanon, a job the he held for 35 years. Vaun received several commendations for his dedication to his job. He would always report to work, regardless of the weather conditions because he knew that people were depending on him. Some of the elderly people along his route would leave small lists of things that they needed in their mail box; Vaun would pick up the items that evening and make sure they were delivered the following day along with their mail. When Vaun retired from the Postal Service, he spent a lot of his free time hunting, fishing and boating. He did this for a while but he eventually became bored and decided to go back to work. He took a job as a night security officer at Tilcon in Wells and stayed there for about 5 years.
Vaun liked to keep himself busy with many different activities. He liked working around the house and was constantly puttering with one thing or another. He took great pride in maintaining his yard and also enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. Vaun was very fond of his beloved golden retriever, Tucker. He got a lot of enjoyment spending time with and playing with his dog. He was a founding member of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department. He worked his way up through the ranks to the position of Assistant Chief. He was also a member of the Lebanon Congregational Church.
Vaun was a very family oriented person; his family remained his top priority throughout his life. He loved spending time with his family members at the many family cookouts, gatherings and holiday get-togethers. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with others. Vaun will be remembered as a genuinely kind and loving man and will be deeply missed by his friends and family.
Vaun was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Helen Cole, a brother, Herbert James Cole and four sisters, Avis Grant, Ruth Bumford, Beatrice Gerrish and Dorothy Cole.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Cole of Lebanon; two sons, James Cole and Jack Cole, Sr., both of Lebanon; six stepchildren, Cheryl Sine of Texas, Diane Van Sinderen of Acton, Cindi Atkinson of Oklahoma, Guy Blanchard of Berwick, Bonnie Day of Florida and Lillian McDonald of Springvale and many nieces, nephews, grand children and great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering celebrating Vaun's life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the East Lebanon Fire Department, located on Depot Road in Lebanon
