Herbert served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer/Gunner on B-17G (#42-38191), 350th Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in York County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 15, 1943 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Herbert was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by enemy fighters and crashed into the Baltic Sea off the island of Lolland, Denmark during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Service # 31219557

Herbert also has a "Cenotaph" in the Forest Grove Cemetery, Lebanon, Maine with his parents.
