A PIONEER WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH
The death of Mrs. Catherine Bogart, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.J. Cook, yesterday, marks the passing of another pioneer. A woman of great courage, her life was passed within the confines of the family circle, but out of the experiences of life, she learned many lessons and was deeply interested in all that related to the welfare of the race.
Catherine Allen was one of 13 children born to William and Nellie Allen. She was born in Worth county, Mo., Feb. 5, 1846, and with her parents crossed the plains by ox team in 1857. The family settled in Lane county near Eugene, where she was married to John W. Bogart March 7, 1861, and for 25 years they made their home in that vicinity. To them were born five daughters and two sons.
In 1887, Mr. and Mrs. Bogart removed to Lincoln county, Wash, On account of Mr. Bogart's failing health, the Washington home was sold in 1906, and for three years Mr. and Mrs. Bogart traveled in the hope that his health might be restored. Finally deciding to live in Elmira, they built them a home here, but it was hardly completed when Mr. Bogart passed away Feb. 26, 1910. Since then Mrs. Bogart has made her home with her children.
Mrs. Bogart was a patient sufferer for many years, and since coming to make her home with Mrs. Coo, three years ago, has been a confirmed invalid, and death came as a release. She was a sincere Christian woman, and had many friends who will mourn her departure.
Mrs. Bogart is survived by four daughters and one son. The children are: Mrs. T.A. Fountain, Elmira, Oregon; Mrs. T.J. Cook, Lebanon; W.G. Bogart, Creston, Washington; Mrs. Daniel Warby, Creston, Washington; and Mrs. J.H. Verfurth of Bisbee, Arizona; also 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; also three sisters, Mrs. Belinda Masterson, Grants Pass, Or.; Mrs. Martha Bentley, Wapato, Wash.; and Mrs. Sarah Patterson, Oakville, Ore.
After a brief funeral service conducted this morning at the Cook home by Mr. John Gillespie, the remains, accompanied by members of the family, were shipped to Elmira, where they will be laid to rest in the family plot. ~~~
