Jonas and his wife and family left Madison Centre, Madison County, New York in 1835 and traveled by wagon with his mother, sister Elizabeth and two brothers, John, and Ira and their families to Fulton County, Illinois. Their youngest brother Salem had come earlier in the year 1831 to McDonough County, Illinois and reported good rich farm land in the area. Their brother Asa came the next year and the four brothers founded the town of Woodsville, but when they applied for a Post Office they were told they couldn't name their town that as there was already a Post Office with that name so they named the town Avon. It became a small, but thriving community.
