Ira left Cortland County, New York in 1835 and traveled by wagon with his mother, sister Elizabeth and two brothers, John and Jonas and their families to Fulton County, Illinois. His twin brother Asa came a year later. It is not known if his wife Sarah (Grow) accompanied him and soon died in Illinois or had died earlier in New York. Most of their children had died in Cortland County, NY before the exodus, except Sarah who came with the family to Illinois and married Mark Moore in "Woodsville"; Samuel stayed in NY; Cornelia Licetna who married James Augustus Blood in Fulton County, ILL; and Harlow Delay who came with the family but later moved on to California. Their youngest brother Salem had come earlier in the year 1831 to McDonough County, Illinois and reported good rich farm land in the area. The four brothers founded the town of "Woodsville," but when they applied for a Post Office they were told they couldn't name their town that as there was already a Post Office with that name so they named the town Avon. It became a small, but thriving community.

Married (1) Sarah Grow abt 1818 of Norwich, Chenango, NY, 8 children: Melanchton 1804-1823; John C 1808-1831; Samuel 1819-1923; Saray 1820-bef 1908; Platt 1821-1831; Cornelia Licetna 1823-?; Clarissa 1826-1831; Harlow Delay 1832-1906. (2) Orpha Daggett 14 Jul 1839, Knox Co., ILL, 5 children: Clarissa E 1840-1908; Nealy Chapin 1842-1918; Phebe 1840-bef 1908; Emily 1846-bef 1960; Orpha 1850-1973.
