Espy was the third of twelve children born to Alonzo Patrick and Mary Catherine (Moose) Benfield. He married Etta Porter.

Moncure - E. F. Benfield, 58-year-old local merchant, died here Friday afternoon at 4:30 following a heart attack. he had not been seriously ill. Funeral services will be conducted here Sunday, but further arrangements are incomplete. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Etta Benfield, of Moncure; his mother, Mrs. L. P. Benfield of Moncure; seven brothers, B. H. Benfield of Sanford, Kenneth R. Benfield of Moncure, H. R. Benfield of Washington, P. J. Benfield of Taylorsville, Floyd Benfield of Durham and Boyd Benfield of High Falls; and four sisters, Mrs. E. L. Weaver, Jr., of Raleigh, Mrs. W. W. Owen of Mount Pleasant, Tenn., Mrs. John W. Radcliffe of Methuen, Mass., and Mrs. N. B. Taylor of Morrisville.
