Mary was the youngest of eight children born to Elizabeth Pennice Moose and (unknown father). She married Alonzo Patrick Benfield in 1889 and they had twelve children: Palmer Jay, Burett Henderson, Espy F., Harry Robert, Ethel Lucille, Florence Catherine, Floyd Monroe, Vera Annice, Boyd Patrick, Cora Eugenia, Byran and Kenneth Ray.
