Jack is the son of Howard S. and Blanche M. McCay Butt. He married Betty Meriweather in 1942.

Jack D. Butts of Decatur died Dec. 28, 1986 in St. Luke's West Hospital, Chesterfield, Missouri. He was a 1956 graduate of Millikin University; a former teacher and coach at Millikin and Illinois State universities; former executive director of St. Clair Vocational Enterprises of Belleville; president and owner of Hadleybrook Standard Breeding Farm; president pro-tem of MCADD Board; member of Macon County Board and of the Purdue University 1943 national champion football team.
He was the father of Kim, Brock, Sherry & Candi. He was also a member of the Boiling Springs Church of God and a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, ranked as Captain.

(Although he was born with the surname "Butt" and his gravestone reads "Butt," like his older brother, Quentin, he changed it to "Butts" and was known as Jack D. Butts until his death.)
