Born in Iowa in 1901, Winnie moved with her parents John and Alice Chapman to Seabrook, Texas before 1910. The Chapmans owned and operated Chapman Dry Goods in Seabrook from that time. Winnie graduated from Webster High School. She married James Franklin Christy in 1925 and they had children: Ruth, James F., Jr., Rosalie, and Barbara Ann. Winnie ran Chapman Dry Goods for over 50 years, retiring in the 1970s.
