John Redmond Porter, "son of Harry and Elizabeth (Bassett) Porter, was born in Brockport, N.Y., Mar. 30, 1824. He received his education in the public schools, and Feb. 12, 1845, was married to Jane M. Dixon. He first settled in Omaha in 1855, where for several years he was in partnership with Harry P. Deuel (his nephew) under the firm name of Porter & Deuel, steamboat agents. He was elected to the legislative council and served during the fifth and sixth sessions, and was police judge of Omaha from 1868 to 1873. He was elected captain of a mounted company organized in Aug., 1864, was mustered into service Aug. 30, and discharged Nov. 13, 1864. He was among the early members of Capitol Lodge No. 3, A.F.& A. M., Omaha, and was also a member of the Odd Fellows. He was elected, Nov. 4, 1856, warden of Omaha Lodge No. 2, I.O.O.F., and also served as treasurer of the grand lodge. Mr. Porter went to New Mexico and Arizona in the early '80s, and was appointed county judge of Gila county, Ariz., by John C. Fremont, then governor of that territory. Mr. Porter died at Los Angeles, Cal. One daughter, Mrs. Edwin Haney, resides in Omaha." (Illustrated History of Nebraska, Vol. II, 1907, google books)

The above death date of 1888 is an error. John and Jane celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 12 Feb 1895 in Los Angeles, CA. His tombstone says he died in 1898.

Inez A. (25592982) b. 1847 d. 1934 m. Edwin Haney;
Ida May b. 1854 d. 28 Sep 1862 in Omaha;
Izetta b. 1859 d. 21 Oct 1862 in Omaha.
