OBITUARY

Fred J. Strickland.
(From Meridale correspondent.)

The death of Fred J. Strickland, one of Meridale's leading business men, occurred at his home here on Thursday morning, after a brief illness. In the summer Mr. Strickland was for some time a patient at an Oneonta hospital, but had so far recovered as to be able to take up work in the firm of Strickland Bros., of which he was a member. On Tuesday evening before his death, after an apparently normal day at the store, he was seized with violent pains and became very ill. On Thursday morning at ten o'clock he died.

Mr. Strickland was born in Meridale forty-seven years ago, and had lived here all his life. He wasa loyal member of the Presbyterian church, an upright business man, good neighbor and a sterling citizen. Of a kindly, pleasant character, he had a host of friends not only in the immediate community, but for many miles around. His loss is keenly felt both in the church and the town.

The deceased is survived by his widow, who was before her marriage was Miss Lulu Jones; his aged mother, Mrs. Euphemia Strickland, and one brother, Tracey Strickland, with who he was in business. The funeral was held on Sunday morning at eleven o'clock at the Presbyterian church, the Rev. Robert J. Lockhart officiating, and burial was made in Meridale cemetery.

[NOTE - Fred Strickland also married Emma Jane Gardner (born Mar. 1878 in NY, USA] on August 8, 1898 in Delaware County, NY. They were divorced in May 1907 in Meredith, NY.]
