Galena Blaze Kills 2

By MIKE ELLIS
Joplin Globe Staff Writer

GALENA, Kan.—A Galena man and woman were burned to death in a fire that gutted a four-room house on Short street between Fifth and Sixth streets about 4:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Dead are Frank Bertwell, 73, known as "Frank the Barber," and Mrs. Mamie Cathryn Dearing, 62 years old.

Assistant Cherokee County Attorney Merle Duncan, Jr., acting coroner, ruled the deaths accidental and said no inquest will be held.

Cherokee County Sheriff Carroll (Frenchie) Lawson said that when Galena firemen arrived the house was engulfed in flames. Lawson said Howard Litch and Howard Price, members of the Galena volunteer fire department, told him they arrived at the scene first and heard the woman scream. The firemen said they saw her raise up on the bed, but they were unable to get into the house because the room was a mass of flames.

The Cherokee county sheriff said the alarm was turned in by the owner of a tavern near the house. Origin of the fire was not determined, he said.

Bertwell's body was found on the floor in the kitchen, face down, by the door, Lawson said. Mrs. Dealing's body was found on a bed.

Duncan said it appeared that Bertwell was trying to get into the bedroom to save the woman. He said the kitchen door was open and that Bertwell's body was found huddled against the kitchen wall with his hands over the back of his head as if he tried to shield himself from the flames.

Galena police said Mrs. Dearing roomed in the Bertwell home.

Mr. Bertwell, who was born in 1889, in Henryetta, Okla., came to Galena 23 years ago. He had owned and operated a barber shop in Galena 23 years, retiring about two years ago.

Survivors include a daughter of Clinton, Okla., and two sons, Freeman L. Bertwell and Lilbern Frank Bertwell, both of Tulsa, Okla.

Mrs. Dearing was born March 15, 1900, in the state of Oklahoma, and had resided in Galena since 1955, moving here from Jefferson City, Mo. She was the widow of Benjamin Dearing, who died in 1954. They were married October 25, 1941, in Linn, Mo. Mrs. Dearing was a member of the Jefferson City Lutheran church.

Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Rhoda Masters of Baxter Springs route 2; two brothers, Raymond Sharp of Baxter Springs route 2 and Norman Sharp of Kellogg, Idaho; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Morris and Mrs. Sarah Golden, both of Baxter Springs route 2, Mrs. Ida Cunningham of Fairland, Okla., and Mrs. Ada Rowden [#97793917] of Galena route 1.

Arrangements will be announced by the Derfelt funeral home of Galena.
