Mr. Charles W. Vogel, 89, of Second Street, Ilion, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2008, in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford. At the time of his passing he had the comfort of his family by his side.
Charles was born on December 13, 1918, in Herkimer, son of the late Charles and Gertrude (Leon) Vogel, and attended schools in Herkimer. He answered the call of duty, enlisting with the United States Army, and was an honorably discharged veteran. He was always rightfully proud of his service to his country. On February 15, 1941, Charles was united in marriage with Katharine A. Hayes at the Ilion Baptist Church. The couple enjoyed 65 years of marriage until the passing of Mrs. Vogel on November 8, 2006.
Mr. Vogel was a caring and kind husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed. Some of his hobbies included going to the casino and playing bingo and traveling. He and his wife enjoyed spending winters in South Carolina and of course the many wonderful times the family shared on Canadarago Lake in Richfield Springs. Charles was a former member of the Ilion Moose Lodge and Elk's Lodge, and also a current American Legion member in Mohawk.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Krick, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Kim Lien, of Carthage; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Mary Ann Vogel, of Ilion; five grandchildren, Kathy Young and her husband, Keith, M/Sgt. Scott Vogel and his wife, Kim, Brian Vogel and his wife, Brandy, Jennifer Walters and her husband, S/Sgt. Jessie, and Erin Miner and husband, Joseph; four great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Kyle Young and Jace and Tanner Vogel; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and special neighbors, Lloyd and Bonnie. Mr. Vogel was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Kenneth Lien and Raymond Krick; by his granddaughter, Raelin Krick; and by his brother, Carl Vogel.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, on Thursday, May 15, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Vogel's funeral will commence at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008, from the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Andrew Peloubet, pastor of the Ilion First Baptist Church, officiating. Funeral procession will follow to Mt. View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls, where he will be laid to rest. Members of American Legion Post No. 25 will conduct a ritualistic service at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday evening.
