Melissa was born in the temporary colony established under Brigham Young in Council Bluffs, Iowa. When the members of the Saints were driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois by the terrorist mobs, her family emigrated to Utah by covered wagon, when she was one year old, in 1850. They returned to Kansas a few years later. Contributor: Douglas Whitney (48980647)

She was the wife of Robert M. Clark. When Melissa and her husband traveled to Colorado to homestead, from Kansas [June 1887] they were accompanied by her parents - Fidelia and Andrew Colton - as well as Melissa's sister Hattie and her family. Her children Albert, William, Maude, Gussie and Robert were with them as well as Hattie's children Frank and Ernie. (From the diary of Melissa Colton Clark as told by Donna Brockish)
