Andrew Colton and his brother Philander joined the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints in Michigan in the late 1830s, and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. When the mobs assassinated Joseph Smith and terrorized the Church members, both families moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Philander joined the Mormon Battalion that deployed to California in the war with Mexico, but Andrew and his family stayed in Iowa for about 4 years. They eventually migrated to Utah, Andrew and his family by covered wagon in 1850.
In the late 1850s Andrew and his family moved to Kansas, but Philander Colton's family and Fidelia Reed( Andrews wife) mother Delia Deliverance Byaam Reed and her siblings remained in Utah, settling in Provo, Vernal and Logan, where many of their descendants reside today.
Andrew enlisted to serve in the Civil War at Wathena Kansas,a member of Company I., 15th Kansas Calvary, enlisted in 1861 and mustered out at Leavenworth 3 years later.
In June 1887 Andrew and Fidelia headed to Colorado with their daughter Melissa and her husband Robert Clark and family as well as their daughter Hattie and her husband Joe Cook and boys. They would return to Kansas later. Andrew died in Bigelow Township.
