Andrew was a direct descendant of Quartermaster George Colton who was from Warwick, England, coming to America in 1644 and settling near Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
Andrew came to Kansas in 1859, and to Marshall county in 1874, making his home in the Bigelow neighborhood. He was a veteran of the Civil War serving in the 44th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded during the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. Andrew ran away from home at the age of sixteen to serve in the Civil War shortly after his father had enlisted. He had to stand on his tip-toes to reach the required height to enlist. He told his mother that he was going to work, and they found him marching with the other soldiers.
He was captured and spent 4 months in a southern prison (Meridian, Miss). He saw action at Pilot Know, Missouri; Columbus, and Duck River... He was parolled 18 April 1865.
On March 15, 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Viola Howell. To this union four girls and five boys were born, one girl and two boys dying in infancy.
After the first child was born in Wathena, Kansas Andrew moved his family to Agnes City, Lyon County, Kansas then in 1874 they settled on a farm in Bigelow, Marshall County, Kansas. He died in Bigelow Township.
