Charles was the son of John Calfee and Margaret "Peggy" Howard. He married Sarah "Sallie" Jane Whitt, and they were the parents of Mary, b. about 1862 and John H., b. about 1864.

"Owing to physical disabilities, he was unable to do active service during the [Civil] War, although his entire sympathies were with the South. In the year 1865, he made a short trip to Indiana with a view to locating, but the climate, not agreeing with him, he gave up the idea and returned home and to farming, carrying it on until 1890, when he sold to the Bertha Zinc Company, and his and his brothers' farms are the present sites of the mines, washing, crushing and roasting machinery. After selling to this company, Mr. Calfee moved to Wytheville... Mr. Calfee himself is one of the Disciples of the Christian Church, of which he has been a member for over a quarter of a century."
