Joseph Addison Calfee died at home at the foot of Abner's Knob, the west end of Pilot Mountain in Montgomery Co., Virginia, on Thursday last in the 92nd year of his age. He was born and reared in the Barren Springs section of Wythe Co., Virginia. During the Civil War, he served three years, having been a member of Co. D, Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He leaves a large family.

Joseph was the son of John Calfee and Margaret Howard. He married Mary Elizabeth Howard and Virginia S. Shanklin (1895).
Joseph and Mary Elizabeth were the parents of Maria, Harmon, Elizabeth, Harrison W., Lena, Norman, Lucy J., and Mary (May) F. and Montgomery.
