Gerry was the youngest child of a large family. He was only 8 years old when his father died. One of his favorite past times when growing up was writing a family newspaper for his mother. His mother loved listening to records of the Irish tenor John McCormack so Gerry loved listening to John McCormack as well. He loved to listen to opera in general. He had an extensive CD collection of operas by the time of his death. He felt that the writers of opera music wrote real songs in contrast to the writers of pop music.

He served as a community relations specialist in Vietnam living in Vietnamese villages during that war. After the war he lived in Prince George's County, Maryland, just south-east of Washington, DC. He worked for the Washington Star and the Washington Times newspapers in the distribution end of the newspaper business. He loved to phone journalists at the Washington Post and complain about the bias in their reporting.

When his oldest brother's (F. Joseph Boese) younger daughter, Kitty, was engaged to be married to Bob Brever, Bob took a job with HUD in Washington, DC. Gerry graciously allowed Bob to live with him for 3 months until Kitty and Bob were married and moved into their own apartment in Fairfax County, VA.

When Gerry became sick at the end of his life, he moved back to the Twin Cities area to be closer to family.
