Milford was founded in 1639 by a group of Puritans from New Haven Colony, who purchased the land from the local Paugussett Indians. The town was originally called Wepawaug, after the river that runs through it, but was later renamed Milford, meaning a ford across a mill stream. It was one of the original members of the New England Confederation,
