There are multiple documents that refer to him as Alastus as well as A. Lastus and Lastus.

Alastus Bilbrey married Clarsie Brown in 1915 in Overton County, Tennessee. He became a widower in 1925 when Clarsie tragically died shortly after the birth of their fifth child.

Their children: Martha Jane Bilbrey buried at Pine Ridge, Linnie Bilbrey Norrod Drown born in 1918. Livvie Bilbrey McCowan, born April 10, 1920, was the wife of Arthur McCowan, currently living in Muncie, Indiana. Pansy Bilbrey was born in 1922. Baby Danzy was born Dec. 15, 1924 and died March 1, 2004. Danzy is buried at Campground in Clarkrange. Clarsie died on Jan. 19, 1925, just a few weeks after giving birth to Danzy.

Alastus married for a second time and had nine more children: Haris Bilbrey (buried at Muddy Pond), Sarah Bilbrey Phillips, Lora Bilbrey Hammersly, Artie Lea Bilbrey Johnson (buried at Campground), JR Bilbrey (buried at Campground), Clauda Bilbrey (buried at Campground), Rosa Bilbrey Stoner, Phyllis "Mary Lue" Bilbrey (buried at Pine Ridge)and Ernal Lee Bilbrey (buried at Campground).

Alastus was a well-known molasses maker in Overton County and he was also a coal miner for a time. He had also made moonshine as well as worked for the local sheriff at different times in his life.

His parents were Wheeler and Martha Jane Bilbrey. Granny refers to Wheeler as "Pa", Martha Jane as "Ma" and she refers to her father Alastus as "Poppy."

My Granny "dips snuff." She first got hooked on it from "taking a pinch of Poppy's" when she was a girl. She was a total daddy's girl since she had no mother and her step-mother was not interested in mothering the children of her husband's first wife.

My granny, Livvie Bilbrey McCowan, passed away February 9th, 2010 just shy of her 90th birthday.
