Daughter of Sarah Keane or Kane and Thomas Bedford.


Place of birth Denaby Main per 1911 England and Wales Census. Family was resident Conisbrough (3 km SE of Denaby Main) in 1901 and Rotherham (12 km SW) in 1911.


Sarah, Thomas and their seven children arrived in Quebec City Jul 1913 aboard the SS Tunisian. Their destination was Cape Breton NS. However, they were resident in Saint John by 1917 when Thomas Jr died and were enumerated there in 1921.


According to the 1930 US Census, Gladys and her sister Evelyn immigrated to the States in 1925. As of 1930 they were resident in Somerville, Middlesex County MA, with their brother Basil (imm 1923). Eveyln was a trained nurse in a private home, while Gladys was a stenographer in a doctor's office.


As of 1940 and 1950, Evelyn and Gladys were living together in Somerville. In 1940, Evelyn was a nurse at a home for the aged, while Gladys was doing mailings for the Chilton Company (a publishing company). In 1950, Evelyn was a nurse at a hospital, and Gladys was a hairdresser at a beauty salon.
