Following graduation in 1942 from Lexington High School, Mildred attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a B.A. in Journalism in 1946. After further training in New York City, she returned to central Illinois, working as a journalist and editor at the National Tuberculosis Association (now the American Lung Association). She married her high school classmate, Richard, on August 22, 1948, and was happily married for over 66 years until his death. A life-long Presbyterian, Mildred was a long-time member of Independent Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and a volunteer in many ministries. She was active in many community charities and clubs. She served as President of the Cahaba Girl Scout Council and the Brookwood Forest PTA, was a founding member of the Ashland Garden Club, and volunteered for many years at the Arthritis Foundation. She loved to travel, but her greatest joy was being with family and friends at her beloved summer cabin on Inland Lake.
