The youngest of six children, Joseph was born in Elizabeth on July 18, 1930 to Franciszek and Magdalena (Krol) Lyszczasz. He attended St. Adalbert School and the Thomas A. Edison Vocation School, both in Elizabeth. Joseph served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1949. He then moved to Linden in 1953.

Joseph was employed as a machinist for Lincoln Mold & Die, Roselle, retiring in 1992.

He was proud of his heritage and celebrated his annual Polish Day birthday, embraced by family and friends. He was also a world traveler and a man who could fix anything. Most importantly, Joseph was a man of great faith believing in God and his Church and in everlasting life in Paradise. He was a member of the St. Joseph Club of Holy Family R.C. Church and a co-founder in 1971 of the Tremley Pt. Civic Organization, both in Linden,

Joseph is the loving husband of fifty-eight years of Mary Lou Evers Lystash, a devoted and wonderful father to his children, Marie Biondi and her husband, Dennis, Nancy Lystash and her husband, Michael Gerbery, and Thomas Lystash. He is also blessed to have his surviving sisters, Bertha Shenk and Helen Sarnicki. Joseph dearly loved and was extremely proud of his three grandchildren, Michael, Matt and Laura Biondi.
