Alice Marie (Thorpe) Cook Giellis, 80, of Alverno Apartments, died peacefully at Ennoble Manor Care Center on Wednesday, April 9, 2008.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.
She was born on Aug. 29, 1927, in Twin Springs, Iowa, daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Marshall) Thorpe. She married Louis J. Cook on Sept. 4, 1945, at St. Mary's Church. They farmed for 18 years at Holy Cross, Iowa.
Alice was employed at the Box Factory, Farley and Loeschter, and Loras College. She worked until age 74 when illness forced her to officially retire.
She had the "green thumb" and enjoyed collecting cookbooks, cooking and baking. Her passion in life was cooking her famous chicken soup, homemade cookies and apple pies. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her four daughters, Patsy (Kenny) Leibfried, of Rickardsville, Iowa, Nancy (Norbert John) Ehrlich, of Peosta, Iowa, Donna (David) Workman, of Vista, Calif., and Alice Gustafson, of Dubuque; two sons, Jerry (Jeannie) Cook, of Dubuque, and Louis (Jackie) Cook, of Holy Cross. Alice leaves behind a beautiful legacy consisting of 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Dwayne (LaVon) Marshall, of Minneapolis, Ralph (Lois), of Dubuque, and George (Mary) Marshal, of Lancaster, S.C.; and her sister, Ruth, of Ocoee, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Louis Cook, the father of her children; a son, Terrance; a grandson, Rob Krueger; and her sister, Rose Ann.
