ANOTHER CAR IS
WRECKED OVER
AT SANDY HOOK
~
Dubuque Family Has Narrow
Escape When Car
Skids Off Road
~
Another serious accident, the third within several weeks, occurred on Sandy Hook hill, across the river from Eagle Point, late Tuesday afternoon when a car driven by Clarence A. Thorpe, a railroad man residing at 769 Samuel Street, Dubuque, skidded on the icy highway and plunged 50 feet down an embankment.

Mrs. Thorpe and two of her children, Willard and Freda, were injured. Mrs. Thorp's back was strained and she was bruised and cut. Freda also suffered a sprained back and Willard was severely bruised. Thorpe and two other children in the family escaped injury.

John Merz, residing near the foot of the hill, went to the assistance of the Thorpes who were driving home from a visit at Prairie du Chien. He brought Mrs. Thorpe and her daughter, Freda, to a hospital, where they were discharged after injuries had been treated.

The Thorpe car was badly damaged from its roll down the embankment and towed into Dubuque by a garage wrecking crew. The top was partially torn off, and it was stripped to a front wheel, running board and fender on one side.

Sandy Hook hill is a glare of ice in spots. There is no guard rail or anything else to protect a car from sliding off the highway down a steep embankment.

Several days ago a car went off the road, turned over and was destroyed in fire. A car driven by an East Moline, ILL., man also skidded off the road and was wrecked in rolling down the embankment.

The Telegraph Herald, Dubuque, Iowa, February 11, 1931

(all early records have family name as THARP. A few kept that spelling, but many changed to Thorpe)
