John N. "Red" Giellis, 74, of 3935 Sunlight Ridge, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Hoffmann, Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where a visitation was held on June 27. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque.
Mr. Giellis retired from the United States Corps of Engineers.
He was born on June 8, 1932, in Dubuque, son of John W. and Lucille (Mueller) Giellis. He married Marcella on Oct. 4, 1990, in Rock Island, Ill.
He was a veteran of the Army, awarded two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart for his service during the Korean War. He was very proud serving his country.
He was a member of American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, and was a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars.
He was an old-car enthusiast. He loved gardening and fishing. He was an avid Cubs and Packers fan, and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all.
Surviving are his wife, Marcella; 12 children, Linda (Eugene Johnson) Bender, Michael (Barb) Giellis, Ginny L. (Tom) Rose, Eugene (Marcia) Giellis, Joseph (Krystal Sprau) Giellis, Connie (Ronald) Priebe, Marcia Hahlen, Edward (Barbara Brokaw) Luedtke, Michael (Lisa) Luedtke, Douglas (Sherry) Luedtke, Tracy (Douglas) Sveum and Jody (Thomas Jr.) Remakel; a special niece, Becky (Joe) Gilbertson; 36 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen "Kay" Schadl; and his beloved dog, Charlie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, John Giellis.
A John N. Giellis Memorial Fund has been established.
