21 March 1963: Harry S. Forney, 79 a former Lebanon County commissioner and for many years a prominent farmer in the area, died Wednesday at 5 p.m. at his home, Palmyra RD 1. He had been ill nine months. Forney, a farmer for many years in the Palmyra area, held the post of county commissioner from 1956 to 1960. In his earlier years, he taught school in North Cornwall and South Annville Townships. His teaching career lasted seven years before he began farming a property south of Palmyra. He was engaged in farming 42 years before retiring 11 years ago. In addition to his farming activities, Forney also operated a retail milk business in Palmyra from 1929 until 1945. Forney maintained his interest in education-and-youth affairs by serving 37 years as a school director in North Londonderry Township and for 35 years as a 4-H club leader. He was also president of the Lebanon Valley Farm Bureau Cooperative for nine years and served as a county representative in the Soil Conservation Service. He was associated for many years with the Lancaster Production Credit and Federal Land Bank Association. He was a past president of the Campbelltown Lions Club and was an active member of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church of Palmyra and the J.A. Schriver Men's Bible Class of the Sunday School. Forney was born in North Cornwall Township, a son of the late Jacob and Mary Shenk Forney. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lizzie Smith Forney; two sons, Cyrus J. Forney and Dr. Homer S. Forney, both of Palmyra; four daughters, Mary, wife of Albert Wade, Campbelltown; Mrs. Helen Dohner, Palmyra; Ruth, wife of Elwood Dohner, Lebanon RD 5; Sara, wife of Joseph M. Kreider, Lebanon RD 4, and Dorothy, wife of Warren Hitz, Hershey RD 1. Seventeen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive. [Lebanon Daily News]
