Raymond was born May 15, 1913 on a family farm between Rankin and Avalon in southern Ellis County, Texas. He was the second of six children born to Arthur William Gorman and Texas Penina Owen, mostly of Irish and Welsh origins. His father was a farmer and cotton ginner in the area. After gradusting highschool, he attended John Tarleton State College in Stephenville and then graduated from Texas A&M College in 1937 with a Batchelors Degree in Vocational Agriculture. After graduation, he married Gladys Frances Baumgartner of Avalon.

Prior to WWII, he taught Ag in Georgetown and San Marcus. During the war, he and Frances lived in Arlington where he taught at Arlington High School. In 1946 he returned to Ellis County and taught in Avalon High School. He moved to Italy in 1948 and taught at Italy High School until he retired.

He was a dedicated mentor to the young men of his community, giving of his time and energy both in and out of the classroom.

He was a member of the Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason, serving a number of office positions in Chambers Creek Lodge #499 over the years.

He and Frances had two daughters, and three grandchildren by the time of his death. The town of Italy honored him with a birthday party in May 1993 on the occasion of his 80th birthday. (this is a preliminary draft, expect updates)
